Yes, it was inspired by wanting to make a TFT but then not having the energy, and realizing that in general I would prefer my tofu to taste like pickle rather than not.
I am also going to do this. And loved this post so much. I am so curious about this camp, and what it entails. This sounds perfect for S. I am too anxious and worried about fucking up (as you describe) to really let myself experiment in the kitchen. The closest I come to that is with baking I hardly ever bake the same thing twice, that is, I always tweak something to try it out, but it's within the confines of the structure of the recipe.
I bet S would love it! Maybe I'll try writing up a sort of "lesson plan" post with a template recipe, like here's a good way to let your kid experiment, with these options.
